The YAP Awards

For Tertiary Screen Students of South Australia

What are the YAP Awards?

The YAP Awards is a screen competition that is exclusive to film and interactive media entries from South Australian tertiary-enrolled students. It is the only screen competition allowing tertiary film students to compete on a level playing field against other student filmmakers creating projects under similar circumstances and with similar budgetary constraints.

What categories are prizes given in?

Best Cinematography

We're looking for brilliant camera work rather than high resolution here. We had a winning film shot on Super 8 last year, so remember its not what you've got but how you use it that matters most! This category is specific to screen students.

Best Editing

An understanding of the basic rules of editing is essential to take out the winning place here. That doesn't mean you can't break the rules, just make sure if you're making or breaking rules that its obvious you know what you're doing. We're looking for care and flair combined. This category is open to students of screen, animation or I.T.

Best Acting

This category is exciting because it is open to any actor whether they are a student or not. If you have acted in a tertiary student film recently - make sure it is being entered in the YAP Awards! Last year's winner was Bridgette Walters for her role in 'Love You Mum' and she wasn't a student. We're looking for depth of character, and a masterful performance. May the best actor win!

Best Production Design

Dazzle us with beautiful or well-crafted production design. We are going to be very open minded about how we judge this one, so surprise us! This category is open to any tertiary student who rises to the occasion.

Best Visual Effects and/or Animation

Animation students and special effects gurus alike may jostle for a finalist position in this category. We encourage you to be as clever as you like, but make your genius relevant to the work at hand. We will even accept visual demonstrations of a computer game as long as it has been submitted for tertiary assessment. This category is open to students of screen, animation or I.T.

Best Screenplay

This award goes to the student responsible for the writing or concept of the film. This category is specific to screen students. This category is open to students of writing, screen, journalism, animation or I.T.

Best Programming or Concept Development

This is a brand new category! We're looking for either a film with 'legs' that shows clever concept development or an interactive media project that has some innovative programming. We encourage IT and Screen students alike to compete for this award.

Best Entrepreneur

This category is new and will be awarded to a student who submits either a film or a multimedia work that has commercial legs. We're looking for someone who has done their market research and created a sellable product. This category will extend to web related designs that support interactive media and are presented to us as a demo in a playable format for screen. It will aslo extend to students who have created client based documentaries or screen related products that demonstrate a viable commercial interest.

YAP Awards for Excellence

Knock us over with your film or interactive media project. This award is open to excellence from any tertiary student who can present something outstanding for the big screen. This prize will only be awarded if there is a film or work that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Best Film

This category is specific to screen students only. The prize for Best Film is the most prestigious award and will go to the best overall film submitted to the competition.
